Editor:
How did you get started in Facilities?
Patrick:
My first experience in Facilities was as a Laundry Mechanic at the
Hyatt Regency, New Orleans hotel 22 years ago. This is a 31 story, 1184
room hotel that is located next door to the Superdome in downtown New
Orleans. I learned quickly and took on many additional duties at this
facility. I was then asked to relocate and take on Facilities
Management duties in Knoxville, TN. I worked there a little more than a
year and again was asked to relocate to a bigger property and more
responsibilities in downtown Washington, D.C. I enjoyed my time working
with Hyatt as it afforded me some very good training opportunities and
experiences that have helped in my development as a Facilities
Professional. Click here to read on...

A Message from Our President-
March
certainly came roaring in like a lion. The cooler temperatures in
Florida were not unwelcome to us, but much more desirable when compared
to our Northern facilities friends who are likely dealing with clearing
snow off of sidewalks and parking lots.
Last month, I attended the IFMA Regional Leadership Workshop. The
workshop provided valuable information on topics of volunteerism and
social networking.
Volunteering allows a member to receive the maximum benefits from his
or her IFMA membership. We do not mean it requires oodles of time from
you. We, too, have a life outside of IFMA and our jobs, (please don't
tell my boss that!).

Councils Anyone??
by Tami Berry, Vice-President
Councils are
special-interest groups reflecting the diverse types of facilities and
job responsibilities represented by IFMA members. Councils provide
opportunities for interaction that transcend geographic boundaries,
enabling members to meet other professionals who share an interest in a
particular FM practice or who work in the same business sector. Read

Sustainable Stuff

Yea thou
I walk through the Valley of Sustainability; I shall fear no budget
cuts.
BY David
L. Dunn, CFM
"Building from a sustainable standpoint reduces operational
costs." Do you believe this statement? I do and I'll tell you why.
I am seeing proof across the board in far too many places to not
believe it. Consequently, we should not consider reducing new construction
or major renovation cost by Value Engineering sustainable design out.
Just Dave Dunn's opinion you say? Well read on McDuff. (Go to the

Set Sustainability Goals for
Your Facility
At a time when resources are hard to come by, approval for new expenses
can be difficult to obtain, even for green investments. Still, setting
goals for your green programs, and measuring results, can help you make
the business case for sustainability in your facility, even in a struggling
economy.
By: Matt
Alderton
Issue Date: February 2009
After a decade in the facilities management profession, David Dunn is
starting to see green. Over the course of his career, Dunn has built,
managed and maintained a lot of buildings, but lately he's noticed that
many more buildings are being built with sustainability in mind.
Ironically the reason isn't just environmental-it's economic.
"The world I live in-the facility management world-has typically
been focused on lifecycle issues and planned replacements," says
Dunn, facilities project manager for the City of Orlando, Fla.
"But as budgets have gotten tighter and tighter, we're now trying
to spend money to extend the life of our buildings' components to get
more out of them in the first place."
The easiest and most effective way to breathe more life into your
facility, according to Dunn, is to make it sustainable. "Out-year
operating costs are dramatically decreased when you build in a
sustainable way," he says.
Indeed, sustainable building systems can help your facility improve not
only its environmental 'image,' but also its bottom line. All it takes
is a pre-meditated plan of action that can be both managed and
measured.

2009 got off to a great start in January with our program,
"Get Fired Up", a fire systems compliance seminar was
presented by D. Chad Norris with United Fire Protection. Those in
attendance received important information about fire safety systems and
the responsibilities and potential penalties placed on the building
owner and/or tenant to perform regular tests of the system. This
program supported the IFMA Human and Environmental Core Competency and
qualified for both CEU and CFM maintenance points. Programs
