CFM Spotlight: William Evans, CFM
|
|
Editor:
How did you get started in Facilities?
Bill: In 1986, I was hired as an Operations Engineer at a 14
story office building in downtown Orlando. My construction
background clinched the deal out of 20 applicants. Having
knowledge in electrical, plumbing, framing, painting and finish work
and could read blue print drawings, it seemed a natural fit.
Within 2 years, I was promoted to Lead Engineer, and 2 years later, an
Assistant Chief Engineer. I worked closely with the Construction
Manager during all building and tenant renovations, which included the
replacement of over 1200 window panes during a 9 month project.
In 1992, I was offered a Chief Engineer position with a different
property management company. The assignment grew from 260,000
square foot to over 550,000 with the addition of 2 facilities by
1996. As the real estate market goes, buildings sell and new
property management take over. I was fortunate to be retained
during 3 ownership changes. In 1999, a new opportunity arose,
Chief Engineer of a brand new 365000 square foot Commercial office
building. Four years later, the facility sold and the new owner
hired a management firm who ask if I'd accept the Facility Manager
position. How could I refuse? I began my FM career November
2003.

A Message
from Geoff Allen, CFM
I'm
happy, and a little sad, to be hitting the stretch run of my second and
final year as chapter President. It's been a great time for me, and the
skills and relationships built during this time will continue for many
years to come. Thanks to all my partners in the chapter leadership, I
think our best days are yet to come!
At the 2008 ¾ year mark, our chapter is having a very good year. A
string of great lunch programs, facility tours and networking events,
ongoing CFM roundtables, a CFM Exam review, and 7 new CFM's! It's so
gratifying to be part of helping other people achieve their CFM, and I
plan to contribute to those programs in a few new expanded ways next
year.
National
CAD Standard Benefits
By John
R. Mitrovka CFM, IIDA, LEED AP
Early in 2008, The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), the
American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the National Institute of
Building Sciences (NCS) developed and released the newest version of
the United States National CAD Standard - Version 4.0.
The United States National CAD Standard (NCS) streamlines and
simplifies the exchange of building design and construction data from
project development throughout the life of a facility. It is used in
over 5000 workplaces and coordinates the efforts of the entire industry
by classifying electronic building design data consistently and
allowing streamlined communication among owners and design and
construction project teams. Use of the NCS can reduce costs and produce
greater efficiency in the design and construction process.
Sustainable
Symantec "Being Green"
by John
Mitrovka, CFM, IIDA, LEED AP
On Thursday August 21st, ten committed IFMA professionals braved the
drenching rain from Tropical Storm Fay to attend a very informative
session on LEED Building Certifications offered at Symantec's Building
in Heathrow.
The two hour session which was complimentary to IFMA members, was
presented by Gary LaMonte, Director of Facility Management -The
Americas, Symantec Corporation. Gary is a 20 year veteran in the commercial
real estate industry and is responsible for business continuity and
disaster recovery, critical building systems, global sustainability and
strategic planning throughout North America and Latin America which
encompasses over 5 million RSF.
You Say Green and I Say Sustainable?
BY David L. Dunn, CFM
Do you
remember "I say Tomaytoe and you say Tomawtoe"? I know the
spelling is wrong, but if you remember this then you'll understand the
title of this article.
Some of my Public Sector colleagues are surprised to discover that
their permitting offices are getting over-run with commercial and
residential builders clamoring to have their projects approved; while
their inspectors don't even know where to begin on considering items
that are Green or Sustainable.
Internships-Benefits For
All
The
benefits of having an intern are that we (the FMs) can teach the
interns the things they need to learn. As FM professionals,
we redefine our own abilities to lead.
Orlando-based
Cubix, Inc., which has been providing professional textile and carpet
care services in Central Florida for the past 10 years, recently
expanded the sales territory of its MilliCare Textile & Carpet Care
franchise. The company now provides the innovative dry polymer
carpet cleaning process to 21 counties across Central Florida.
Their coast-to-coast territory encompasses the entire Tampa Bay area,
through Orlando to Volusia county and reaches as far south as Collier
county.

CFM Exam Review Course
Our CFM Review Course that was held in July proved to be
quite a success. We had 20 participants and 7 have gone on to
achieve their CFM designations shortly after completing the two day
course. The course was offered at a $200 discount from the regular rate
and saved on travel costs since it was local. Next year we will have
our very own instructor in our chapter. Geoff Allen, CFM, will be
getting certified to teach the course and we will be scheduling more
Review classes in Spring 2009.
